"Let's go to the movies ... let's go see the stars ..."

This blog post could also be titled Reason #850919102 Why I Love Living In The Heart Of The City! On Sunday, I am doing something très Sex and the City. I'm going to see a black and white movie on the big screen at the Hollywood Theatre on Broadway. The Hollywood Theatre is a family-owned movie theatre here in Vancouver that's been open and running for 75 years! It's the oldest family-owned theatre in the province (maybe the country?) and it's managed to retain all of its 1940s glamour and charm ... the red velvet seats, the little ticket kiosk that pokes out onto the sidewalk, the vintage popcorn machine. It opened in 1935 and tickets back then cost a mere 10 cents! Hard to believe tickets nowadays cost $10+ ...

Anyway, to celebrate its 75 anniversary, the Hollywood Theatre is hosting a big celebration this weekend with some classic movies including one of my all-time faves ... Casablanca!

If you know me, then you know that I absolutely love Casablanca. It's my 2nd favorite movie of all-time, beaten only by the ever amazing Gone With The Wind. I'm sorry, Humphrey Bogart, but NOTHING can beat Gone With The Wind. My friend Grace is also really into black and white movies and so we're taking ourselves on a whimsical time travel trip and will be getting all dressed up and heading to the movies this weekend together. I am so excited! I will try to remember to post pictures.

Fame! I'm gonna live forever ....

I'm gonna learn how to fly ...



I went to see FAME yesterday. As someone who grew up watching (and loving) reruns of the TV show, I'm still not 100% sure how I felt about the movie. The singing was fantastic. I know hard-core Fame fans will probably attack me on this, but I really think Naturi Naughton (who played Denise) put Irene Cara to shame. Naughton's rendition of Out Here On My Own totally gave me goosebumps and I thought it was WAY better than the original. (You can see her performing it on Good Morning America here.) I wasn't all that impressed with the dancing though ... which is kind of weird, since it's being marketed as a "dance movie" and not a "musical". Some of the choreography was awesome but for the most part I found the dancing bits kinda boring. So even though the singing was sensational, I'm only giving it a 7.5 out of 10 ...

Totally UP-lifting

My mom & I had a mother-daughter date night last night and we went to see the new Disney Pixar movie, UP. I had seen the trailer and thought it looked kinda cute, but it was really the rave reviews from friends who had seen it that convinced me to pay $15 to watch it in 3D at the theatre. Usually, I just rent "kid movies" and I can't remember the last time I went to see an animated film in theatres ... I think the last one I saw was Monsters Inc back in high school. But anywhoo ... I am soooooooo very glad that I caved and went. It was AMAZING.

Awesome animation. Awesome plot. Awesome moral to the story. Awesome, awesome, awesome. Go see it, you'll love it.
