The Chocolate Chronicles, part 1

Xinxin and I are both foodies and every time we hang out together, our conversation always finds a way of shifting to food.

"Have you tried such-and-such restaurant yet," she'll ask.
"No, I haven't. I've heard of it, though."
"Oh, well we HAVE to go! Add it to the list."
"Consider it added. Oh hey, that reminds me ... have you tried such-and-such cafe?"

I'm not even kidding, this is how 99.9% of our conversations unfold. The list (and yes, we really do refer to it as "the list") is a continuously growing collection of restaurants, cafes, bakeries, delis, grocery stores and sushi bars that we have promised to explore together. One of the places on the list was Thomas Haas Patisserie. Xinxin is a big Thomas Haas fan, and when she heard that I'd never been it was one of the first things she added to our "must try" list. Then Lynda showed up at Grace's birthday party with a Thomas Haas crispy chocolate raspberry cake and goodness gracious it was "shut your pie hole" delicious! What really sealed the deal, though, was the ridiculous craving I've been having lately for French macarons. When I did a little research online and found out that Thomas Haas apparently has the best macarons in the city, I knew we had to cross this place off the list pronto. So a chocolate date was set, and this afternoon Xinxin and I braved the damp rainy weather outside to get lattes and dessert here:

Thomas Haas grew up and began his career as a culinary genius in Europe. He came to North America in 1995 and has worked as the executive pastry chef at the Four Seasons Vancouver Hotel and, later, as executive pastry chef at Daniel restaurant in NYC. He's appeared on Martha Stewart several times and was voted one of the top ten chefs in America by both Chocolatier and Pastry Art & Design magazines, so you know he's the real deal. Needless to say, with credentials like that, I had some big expectations for his patisserie.

Truth be told, it doesn't look like much from the outside. In fact, I've passed by here a bazillion times during my strolls down Broadway Street and I had no idea it was even there until I googled it to find out the address. But trust me ... once you step inside, it's love at first sight. Chocolates, truffles, cookies, cakes, cupcakes, macaroons, croissants, danishes, breads and scones all neatly showcased in clear glass shelves, each one calling out to me. I eventually chose a champagne truffle and Xinxin ordered almond mascarpone. And, of course, we ordered six French macarons in pistachio, chocolate and raspberry flavors.

The champagne truffle was delish, but the French macarons are what really stole my heart:

I'm not gonna lie - this place is just a tad bit crazy expensive. The $7 truffle didn't really surprise me as that seems to be the going rate for gourmet desserts here in Vancouver, but six macarons cost a whopping $9.99 .... and in case you can't tell by the photo, they are teeny tiny! Gosh.

Overall impression - Thomas Haas is definitely home to some absolutely fantastic goodies and I'll be back for more French macarons when I need an indulgent pick-me-up, but with such a lofty price tag I doubt this patisserie will become one of my frequent favorites. And that's probably a good thing, because I could seriously eat those macarons every day, all day, for the rest of my life.

Love + chocolate, Stephanie

missing in action

Hey everyone!

I realize that it might seem as though I've fallen off the face of the planet recently but I have a VERY good reason for my lack of blogging this week. We've had a little problem at the apartment with ..... mice. Yeah. I know. We can all squeal "ewwwwwwwww" together right about now.

I wish I could explain the chaos that has been my life for the past 48 hours but there really are no words to do it justice. Let's just say, there was some hyperventilating going on and lots of tears and screaming and brooms banging. I spent the last two days sleeping on my friends' couches, and tonight will be my first night back in the apartment.

The good news is, traps have been set and the hole we found in the bathroom which was most likely their point of entry has been sealed off and nobody has seen any mice lurking about recently ... Bad news is, there were mice in here and the thought of mice in my home just grosses me out!

So there you have it, friends - city life isn't ALWAYS quite as glamorous as it may seem.

In the midst of all this, I'm trying to count my blessings. Katie and I have lived here for almost a year now and haven't had any kind of problems with unwelcome critters until this week. And we'll gladly take mice over bedbugs or rats or *heaven forbid* cockroaches. I'm feeling blessed that I have a friend who is a trained zoologist and who studied rodents in Costa Rica for a year ... she has been in and out of this apartment over the last 48 hours investigating and has assured us that all should be fine from here on out. I'm grateful to be surrounded by wonderful friends like Suzanne and Lynda have been so sweet and supportive. I'm fortunate to have had a place to stay when I was too traumatized and grossed out to stay at my own apartment. This could have been *SO* much worse.

I hope to be back to my regular posting soon! I have lots of crazy fun things coming up - a gazillion holiday parties, etc - and I still have tons of journaling from Shimelle's class to share. Fingers crossed that things go back to normal by this weekend.

Weekend Plans

"Let's go to the movies ... let's go see the stars ..."

This blog post could also be titled Reason #850919102 Why I Love Living In The Heart Of The City! On Sunday, I am doing something trรจs Sex and the City. I'm going to see a black and white movie on the big screen at the Hollywood Theatre on Broadway. The Hollywood Theatre is a family-owned movie theatre here in Vancouver that's been open and running for 75 years! It's the oldest family-owned theatre in the province (maybe the country?) and it's managed to retain all of its 1940s glamour and charm ... the red velvet seats, the little ticket kiosk that pokes out onto the sidewalk, the vintage popcorn machine. It opened in 1935 and tickets back then cost a mere 10 cents! Hard to believe tickets nowadays cost $10+ ...

Anyway, to celebrate its 75 anniversary, the Hollywood Theatre is hosting a big celebration this weekend with some classic movies including one of my all-time faves ... Casablanca!

If you know me, then you know that I absolutely love Casablanca. It's my 2nd favorite movie of all-time, beaten only by the ever amazing Gone With The Wind. I'm sorry, Humphrey Bogart, but NOTHING can beat Gone With The Wind. My friend Grace is also really into black and white movies and so we're taking ourselves on a whimsical time travel trip and will be getting all dressed up and heading to the movies this weekend together. I am so excited! I will try to remember to post pictures.

If you live in Vancouver, you can find more info on the Hollywood Theatre's weekend celebration here.

Anyone else have any fun weekend plans?

Oh Oreo.

Reason #451 why I love living where I do ... you get a craving for Oreo cookies (as I did tonight) and you just walk around the corner to the grocery store on Broadway and buy some. *sigh* It never gets old. When you grow up in a super small town like I did, little things like that just seem sooooooo great. I love the city! lol

So, aside from stuffing my face with cookies as I watch the Food Network, I've been busy spending quality time with my friends and enjoying these last few days of summer. The past few weeks have been full of pot luck dinners, board game nights, lazy beach days and of course 9-5 work. I have to admit, though - I'm ready for summer to come to an end. I'm ready for autumn, I'm ready for Thanksgiving, I'm ready sweaters and rain boots and Sunday afternoons at Starbucks sipping pumpkin spiced lattes. It's been such a beautiful, fun-filled summer ... but I'm ready for the next season. Bring it on!

I'll be taking a little break from blogging until next week. I just have an insanely busy week ahead of me - potluck and movie night with friends tomorrow, Dave's birthday party on Wednesday, packing on Thursday and going camping this weekend on Vancouver Island. I'm exhausted just thinking about!

So I'll see you all next week with some exciting blog-related news!
